ZX Auto 1949

2026-10-03 04:10:00

Model Overview

The ZX Auto 1949 is a full-size pick-up truck introduced by ZX Auto in late 2021, making it China's first indigenous full-size pick-up truck. The name "1949" pays tribute to the founding year of ZX Auto's original factory—formerly the Automobile Brigade of the Jizhong Military District of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, which was among the earliest bus manufacturers in China. Positioned in the high-end full-size pick-up segment, the truck targets off-road enthusiasts, overland adventurers, and family buyers requiring generous payload capacity. The 2025 ZX Auto 1949 was launched in September 2024 across six variants, with official retail prices starting from RM125,300. Powertrain options include both petrol and diesel engines, offered in 2WD and 4WD configurations.

Design Language

The ZX Auto 1949 is defined by its rugged and imposing full-size silhouette. The front fascia features an oversized blacked-out horizontal grille with radial trim elements, flanking split-type headlamp clusters that blend seamlessly into the grille design. Complemented by a substantial blacked-out front bumper skid plate, it delivers an authoritative road presence. Distinct power bulges on the bonnet flow forward, reinforcing its muscular appearance.

In terms of dimensions, the standard double-cab version measures 5,440 × 2,045 × 1,965 mm with a 3,230 mm wheelbase, while the extended double-cab variant stretches to 5,692 mm in length with a 3,513 mm wheelbase. Its 2,045 mm ultra-wide body gives it a commanding stature comparable to imported full-size pick-ups such as the Ford F-150. Flared front and rear wheel arches further elevate its tough, utilitarian profile. Inside, the cabin receives generous soft-touch materials, housing a portrait-oriented 15.6-inch central infotainment touchscreen and an integrated instrument cluster. Passenger-focused variants also offer an optional luxury red interior theme.

Powertrain and Performance

The ZX Auto 1949 is offered with two powertrain choices:

  • Petrol variant: Powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged direct-injection (GDI) petrol engine delivering 145 kW (197 PS) and 360 Nm of torque.

  • Diesel variant: Powered by a Nissan/Renault-sourced 2.3-litre turbodiesel engine (engine code ZXDDi23-6A), producing 120 kW (163 PS) and 380 Nm of peak torque.

Transmission options include a ZF 8-speed automatic (8AT) for the petrol model, while the diesel model provides the choice of a 6-speed manual or a ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox. Combined fuel consumption for the diesel version is rated at around 8.1 L/100 km, backed by an 80-litre large-capacity fuel tank.

Chassis and Handling

The ZX Auto 1949 is engineered on a robust ladder-frame chassis. Up front, it features an aluminium-magnesium alloy double wishbone independent suspension; the rear suspension is configured based on the variant: passenger variants adopt a five-link coil-spring rigid axle setup for improved ride comfort, whereas commercial variants feature a leaf-spring rear suspension focused on payload endurance.

The chassis was professionally tuned by world-renowned motorsport specialist Prodrive. The 4WD system incorporates a BorgWarner part-time four-wheel drive unit, with an optional rear axle differential lock. Off-road capability figures include a ground clearance of 240 mm and a maximum wading depth of 850 mm. Factory-fitted 285-section all-terrain (AT) tyres come standard, alongside a rated towing capacity of 2.5 tonnes.

Cabin and Features

Inside, the ZX Auto 1949 translates its full-size footprint into generous cabin room. The rear seat backrest is set at a comfortable 116-degree recline angle, equipped with a fold-down centre armrest and dedicated rear air-conditioning vents. Standard amenities include front and rear parking sensors, with a 360-degree surround-view camera system available as an option; other features include a wireless smartphone charger, seat heating, and power-adjustable driver and front passenger seats. In terms of cargo space, the short cargo bed on the passenger variant measures 1,530 × 1,700 × 515 mm, while the long-bed commercial variant extends to 1,810 mm. The cargo bed is factory-coated with a heavy-duty spray-on bedliner and pre-fitted anchor points, complemented by a hydraulic damper-assisted soft-drop tailgate.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Safety-wise, the ZX Auto 1949 is built with a reinforced "3H" high-rigidity cage body structure utilizing 61.3% high-strength steel content. Active safety is supported by standard Electronic Stability Control (ESC), whilst driver assistance features include cruise control and a reverse camera. Notably, side airbags and curtain airbags are omitted across the range, and adaptive cruise control (ACC) is not equipped.

Market Performance and Reception

As the pioneering Chinese-brand full-size pick-up truck, the ZX Auto 1949 holds substantial market significance. Internationally, the vehicle has been exported to several overseas markets across the Middle East (Qatar) and South America (Argentina), officially entering the market in Doha, Qatar in January 2025.

Feedback from owners and automotive media highlights its sheer body dimensions and commanding road presence as standout strengths—its 2,045 mm width delivers a visual impact on par with imported full-size rivals; the Renault/Nissan 2.3T turbodiesel engine has earned praise for its balanced output and fuel efficiency; the multi-link rear suspension and Prodrive-tuned chassis deliver exceptional ride comfort for a pick-up; and an observed real-world fuel economy of around 8.5 L/100 km provides a notable advantage in the full-size category. On the critique front, reviewers note that the infotainment system's responsiveness and menu logic could be improved; side and curtain airbags are lacking across the line-up; and the cabin plastics remain relatively prominent. Overall, anchored by its core formula of "full-size platform + Renault 2.3T diesel engine + ZF 8AT + Prodrive-tuned chassis" and paired with a competitive entry price of RM125,300, the ZX Auto 1949 has successfully established a unique value proposition within the full-size pick-up segment.
